ELT-2: Can-Technology-Replace-the-Teachers

A Brief Overview of English                           Language and Technology

Since ancient times the teaching was parted out through gurukul system, where there was a 'guru' 'shishya' relationship and shishya used to help his/her guru, when the help was demanded/asked. It gradually developed with proceeding time further and we had specifically in India mughals, darbars, Brahmins, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra(4 classes) etc. The former were involved in science, medical and technology like professions and also had been claimed for hidden desire of domination.

With progression of time ahead, we saw the arrival of Britishers in India, then the gradual establishment of English language as a second language in India, where by gaining status of official langauge, it was considered as lingua-franca and link-language.

While today we can see the significant difference between then and this time. Though many policies, schemes regarding education system have been invented but still it urges to relook into the whole compound of ELT.

CAN TECHNOLOGY REPLACE THE TEACHERS?

It seems to be a great question mark on teacher's own personality. Is a teacher like personality more vulnerable to such situations, so that they easily get succumbed to? If it is so, then what they will teach to their after coming generations(as teachers are considered to be a future maker)? Similarly what they have learnt from their teachers..But isn't it, for this also a morally good and disciplined teacher is required..!

This may be hard to find but we first look into ourselves, where we are.

Yes it is that the technology has colonised poeple very badly. Especially those who're illiterate and don't know how to cope up with the new and upcoming challenges. The people who are well-experienced and well-equipped won't have any problem, with any kind of situations but the thing is, they need to push themselves constantly and continuously.

For Example: Robinson Crusoe(Slave&master relationship).

Mobydick: The relation between Ahab and the albino whale(mobydick).

Contagion: Deforestation like disaster.

As these personalities were ignorant and perceived as trivia in terms of knowledge, it was easy to colonise them.

In the same manner the technology is working.

Modern Times: where it seems that the humans are working against naturality but this is due to influence of technology that it had made them made. As they are unaware of they are just working as instructed without sensing the things rightly and this is how master&slave relation can be defined.

Given Points

  1.  communication skills.

  11. Well-equipped with subject knowledge and organization of content.
  12. Transperancy/Openness of the mind.
  13. Expressive.
  14. Healthful state of mind because computer operates through humans, so the human can't be drewn into. He/she should remain in-between, neither one should become master nor slave of technology.
  15. A swift and smooth multitasker.
  16. Believer of autonomy in education.
  17. A sensible adapter.
  18. Comprehensive counselling network(in terms of collectivity).

There is a vast difference between Indian education and Finland education system, yet it also differs from US and UK system of education. In Finland children aren't allowed to take formal education until they're of 7 and to sit in National assessment until transforming into 16 of their age. Therefore it is seen that they do great in all areas of life; their creative impulse is very strong, they can freely share their ideas, the teachers are highly automated so that they can place positive remarks on each individualized performance. Thus this finish education system also differs in respect of rationale to the other universities as they are obsessed in competition, while here there is no scope of doing so and the children are made free from doing homework or any kind of assignments and hence there is no question of grade.

In Indian context, education starts from grading system. It is being believed that this is the key to enter in higher degree courses and to get a good career but it rarely happens and also it compels because it obliges students to think that good grade will lead them to good college/University education with good infrastructure and faculty but this isn't required from market. Market wants something indifferent.

Thus President Kovind says that the need to give autonomy to universities/colleges have now arisen. Though in India we have 903 universities and 39, 050 colleges but there is  a huge gap in respect of gaining Worldly excellence in terms of education quality in India and so it is being decided that 20 universities would get promoted further and will be entitled  as 'universities of emminence' after pitting few of the universities in competition.

"man is condemned to be free. Condemned, because he did not create himself, yet is nevertheless at liberty, and from the moment that he is thrown into this world he is responsible for everything he does."

                                                     ~Jean Paul Sartre

Education in Finland arena seems to be progressive, in India regressive and the idea of emminity seems to be the resolution from all restrictions. It is yet remaining to be seen, if this idea works or not because in Finland it was adapted well at earliest, while in India it is just framed and only made applicable to higher studies.

Moreover with the advent of technology, the question of the amount of technology to be used in teaching and learning is aroused.

While with the entry of AI, we see it has reduced human interaction and snatched the naturality of learning, reflecting and doing hardwork. The things which were used be done naturally, is now happening digitally.

Machine based test: Where two types of objective customization go parallely and it is in lack of one, that another is discovered. Earlier the preparation of objective questions, was taking some one hour but now with the help of AI driven assessment software, it only takes one minute, customizing questions as per the learner's need and giving instantaneous results. It also nurtures accuracy and making teachers focused rather than placing them only as a general advicer for students, which is actually pushing students to look a new learning path.

An another software(Karnick), which is serving with employability score for a student. That shows you where you're standing at present and suggests you which skills are yet needed to get fit in data scientist job, so the student can start work accordingly.

A prediction is also made that in coming times, physical invigilators would be replaced with online invigilators. Where it will record all the movements  remotely done by the students during conduction of examination.

It seems as step by step technology is widening its legs so what can be the nearest solution for coping up with this situation. It isn't possible that the teachers can now succumb to technology, while technology is doing its work in unprecedented manner. In conclusion one can only say that as technology is operated through humans, humans need to be more accurate and with appropriate precision and must be well-equipped with collaborative ideas, which is more emphasized.

Key takeaways from the advertisements, shown in the video
Mainly from Sir's speech it is deciphered that the requirement of technology goes for students not for teachers as those are already paid the salary so they can buy.
If students are using tablets they should use for academic purpose and for their personal growth. They should share what they are learning on any of the social media platforms and must create YouTube channel, blogs/discover various apps etc. Rather than succumbing to traditional mode of learning they should adapt smartly with the ongoing ways of learning.

Main Video on Tablet Distribution, with inclusion of three videos on various advertisements.

Video(1): Internet Baby.

Freedom through technology: Google.

Video(2): An idea of virtuality in upcoming times.

Where an aged man goes for admission but due to insufficient space, he is denied to get his grandchild's admission. Thus the idea comes of getting education virtually, where all the things interrelated with education are aired virtually.

Video-3: A story of an electrician named Sanjay, living in Ratnouli, Muzaffarnagar, Bihar. In search for job going to Delhi: a connection with scams and corruption, happening in Narega(A small village).

A ray of hope in the form of website from where the grievances of all villagians, who had been forfeited regarding their possession of lands, are lodged and the problem is resolved.

All in all it suggests us that in obsession of technology, one can't mar the very humanbeing inside because all creation is done by humans, humans are at disposal in inventing technology also, so how they can drive themselves in such a way that they are unable to found their whereabouts, which is actually engrossed in technology. Why one shouldn't choose a middle path, where it is in blended learning mode and where the human skills can be legitimized through technology rather than getting subverted.

If in this way learning and teaching is happening with all prescribed qualities given in above(under given points section) then education can thrive and rather than teachers getting replaced by technology, they would facilitate their working process with technology.

Postcolonial Films: A film review on The black Prince by Kavi Raz

"From Dark to Light"
[Without his mother in Dark, with his mother in Light as his mother is the key to history]

These frames highlights, how Duleep Singh is removed from his mother and when raised under John Login, how at the age of 15 sent to England and is involved with Queen Victoria. He as a king and the palace. Where he has a hope to go to India(as displayed in last gif image).

The Black Prince is an international historical drama, set on 1849, screened in 2017, directed by Kavi Raz.

Duleep Singh a Sikh, who is the last king of Punjab area after his father, Maharajah Ranjit Singh. He was throned at five but as Punjab annexed with British India, the son was removed from his mother and put under the guardianship of British Surgeon, Dr. John Login.

At age of 'fifteen' he is sent to England, where relationship between Queen Victoria and Duleep Singh develops.

Eventually Duleep Singh is able to reestablish contact with his mother and as a result begins to reconnect with his culture of birth. Though trying to reclaim his kingdom in India, but continually thwarted by British Colonials.

Reunion with his mother
Where Duleep's mother is emphasizing on the throne to be claimed as it is for him and how one can sacrifice one's right and develop a temparament to see someone snatching away his own property.

It only happens when one has become seer and in the name of religion abandoned everything. Such things doesn't matter in their lives.

Mira Nair: Movie Frame Studies/Review of Reluctant Fundamentalist

The Reluctant Fundamentalist, a political thriller drama movie by Mira Nair, released in 2012, based on Mohsin Hamid unpublished novel(2007). This was highly flipped movie, but this movie received mixed critical views along with awards, which payed homage due to its addressing the efforts of tolerance and xenophobia.

As it is based on the story of 9/11(September 11, 2001 attack) by Al Qaeeda coordinated four terrorist groups in America, it engulfed Riz Ahmed(Changez)who was innocent, unaware of and flowing with nature.

Who was knowing, something unusual like this is going to happen...For which only he would be targeted as he is associated from the blind capitalists point of view to the very roots of terrorism. Though one tries to wash all the stains, but somewhere the deep Marks will remain. This is the reason the person though tried to wash hardly the stains, which were about to abuse/inflict him/her badly but its scars remain and it instigate you till your death.
May be that's why such people who belong to such belongings and traces, considering this not trying to evolve themselves as they know somewhere that though they would try hard, but they won't have fair escapism from their pasts and it will surface again and again.

On the contrary people are also of such tendency that they wouldn't like change and always remain in search of finding  faults in the persona, who have changed him/her.

Thus society plays a crucial in person's life. But one can't altogether blame society for everything. There is something to be played and seen from a person's side.
Riz Ahmed, belongs to Pakistani family, the family struggles with financial crisis but he gets scholarship to pursue his studies at Princeton college. When got job under Samson(a top wall street firm) he fell in love with Erica, a photographer. As when he encountered this incident in Manila, where he went for business, he is picked out and interrogated by American Federal Officials. We feel its repercussions in his relationship with Erica, where Erica finding herself responsible for her former boyfriend's death and exhibiting some intimate scenes of herself and Changez and due to this they had breakup.

After Visa expiration, Changez returns to Lahore. Where he is hired as a university's lecturer as departing foreign professors have left vacancies. Due to intrusion of Americans in Pakistan, Riz voices dissatisfaction and when founding Lincoln(a journalist from America in Pakistan), surveilling outside his office, he declares him to be a CIA agent and possibly recruited by Rainer.
Meanwhile Rainer is killed and Changez is blamed to be the murderer of Rainer and so when he is texting to his sister, Lincoln demands his phone, to be checked if he is truthfully texting his sister or not.
During this ongoing scuffle, Lincoln holds Changez at the gunpoint, uses him as a shield and in attempt to kill Changez, his brother is shooted and killed, in return Lincoln is wounded badly by the protesters outside and is quickly removed by CIA from the crowed, having learnt that Changez isn't involved.
In New York movie by Aditya Chopra and Yash Chopra. Alike John Abraham, playing the role of Mr. Sheikh, 1200 others are detained, among whom the common thing is religion.

Though Mr. Sheikh is trying to prove that he loves America but he is suspected on the basis of his clicking photos of world trade center, while he explains that as he is affiliated with architecture, he has to do but his arguments aren't moderated and he is further tormented by the Federal Beaureu investigation officials.

A similar prejudice and event we can see in 'the reluctant fundamentalist' movie by Mira Nair as Jim is also suspect on the basis of his religion.

As a lecturer, he is teaching in Pakistan but due to misinterpretation of the essence of the lecture, the students got him wrong and so it is simplified later on by Changez.

Thus to watch how a Pakistani is surviving in his most loved country. Where  people don't consider his love for the country but his religion and origination and allege him to be involved with Al Qaeeda terrorists' groups.

A Brief Review
Seeing the central character named Changez, who is a lover of America but thrushed to conceive him as a Pakistani. As it is said: "Not the whole river is tained, due to only fish's stains". But he is considered to be similar like terrorist group as Pakistan is notorious of having such conflicting and disputing credentials in her country. None knows who is going to pay the price of the thing, which they haven't committed.

"Looks can be deceiving, I'm a lover of Am Mira Nair: Movie Frame Studies of Reluctant Fundamentalist erica, although I was raised to feel very Pakistani"-Changez(Riz Ahmed).

In this manner, though an American by bringing up, settled in, loving its Culture but ultimately retained as Pakistani. Returning to Pakistan, having a job as a university lecturer, but there also he isn't spared and those historical traces recurred again in the form of Lincoln and Rainer. As it is said until and unless, you don't deal with the things, which disturbed you, it will keep on surfacing unwantedly and you're destined to give it farewell willingly or unwillingly. Same is confronted by Changez/Jim.

Postcolonial Films' Reviews: Midnight's Children, Reluctant Fundamentalist, Abdul&Victoria and The Black Prince

Postcolonial films: Started with the advent of Colonialism. We see here 'Four Movie Reviews'.
The midnight's children is an example of colonialism, postcolonialism and magic realism. Where it is portraying the children, who had taken birth during midnight on 15th August 1947. Though the situation at present seems to be hopeful but something horrific from this is awaiting to come and which comes in the form of Emergency by Indira Gandhi.
The Reluctant Fundamentalist, based on America and Pakistan conflict, on Al Qaeeda attack. Where a stranger from Pakistan into America is taken as other and blamed of unknown and unimaginative act.
Victoria&Abdul with Ngugi Wa Thiongo's African Literature. The film is based on slavery how from critical point of view and from other courtiers point of views, Abdul Karim ceased to be only a slave. While he is having good tuning with Queen Victoria, with which he himself is satiated. It seems Queen Victoria's discontented life is made contented through companionship of Abdul Karim and Karim is just enjoying the lavishes given by Queen Victoria.
The  is based on colonialism and imperialism, which tried to annex Punjab with British India and in an attempt snatched many rights from the rightful people.

For example: Duleep Singh's Throne.

1849, 1947[1975-77], 2007-2012, 2017{one can refer to different historical happenings of the mentioned periods through these four movies}.

Salman Rushdie-Movie Frame studies/Review on Midnight's Children

Midnight's Children is a 1981 novel by Salman Rushdie. It portrays India's transition from British Colonialism to Independance and partition of India. It is a great example of post-colonialism, post-modernism and the magic realist literature. It also portrays the controversial issue of India, the emergency advised by Indira Gandhi and approved by Khurshid Ahmed Ali. Due to internal and external disturbances, the civil liberties were curbed, election suspended, press was censored etc.

The reunion of the mother and Saleem Sinai, the son after a very long time.
As the novel is based on culture-counter memory, all characters of this novel more or less, are involved in and similarly it is the case of Saleem. Who is an eye-witness of the happenings in India during emergency.

Nadir Khan, an accused man, hid himself in Aziz Khan's underground in his own house. Though Naseem Aziz(his wife) was against this, Aziz determination is thrust upon her and she had to react accordingly.

If generally we see through Naseem's lens, the conflict between Aziz and Naseem seems to be denoting the idea of feminism. While on Aziz's part though seeming to be harsh at surface level, but have played a human's role, by rescuing Nadir.

India is known for its trains/one can say that as the train was discovered by Britishers, it is a reminder to the Indians that those were mere puppets in their hands, they had such capacity and stamina to evolve Bharat in somethingelse and thay did it.

During emergency period, 25 June 1975-21 March 1977(24 months) slum areas were shattered, forced sterilization was carried on and there was constant violation of civil rights. It was predicted that the this experiment of autocracy and violation of civil rights against Nehruvian Democartic Ideal, should be made socially open, so that the people being catalyst can reflect upon, concerning their own emotions and feelings.

The two special midnight children, born in midnight of 15th August, 1947(others who were assumed to be imbued with magic). Shiv and Saleem Sinai. Shiv was actually a muslim boy but due to inferiority towards the rich, the two were exchanged by Maria Parera and so Saleem was brought up as a Hindu boy, while Shiv as a muslim boy. Later on when Shiv(Saleem) is admitted in hospital and requiring some blood to heal his health, the blood didn't match with any of his parents and so it was suspected.

Happenings during emergency period.

The prosperous and affluent heritage of India. In this movie Parvati is considered as 'witch' who knows the magic and has the ability to make invisible anyone.

As Saleem's nose was considered to be abnormally big, it was cutted down through a small surgery.

In this novel we see many aspects in many characters.

For example: Aziz like to talk for politics, while Naseem has soft corner(devouted)for religion and domestic chores of the house.

In a nutshell Salman Rushdie has tried to highlight in midnight's children, the happenings  in India, during the time of emergency. Where we got to know through the two characters Shiva and Saleem that both though belonging to a particular identity but fated to an unusual destinies. Which impels one to think that how such things are happening? Wasn't it good to be ignorant of real identity, than functioning likewise? Which is known where in the latter part of movie, the real identity is revealed and one can think when confronting the reality that it is good to be ignorant than living with double consciousness.
