Abstract

As we are always curious about what was India prior the advent of “Mahatma Gandhiji" (the father of our nation) and how it transformed after the quit India movement or whether it has transformed or not. If it has transformed then at what extreme. These many questions arise in our minds. But here you would get your each question’s answers, which I am going to illustrate by comparing kanthapura (Raja Ram Mohan Roy’s) with Ramayana. Here we would see how Gandhiji is idealised in Vishnu’s avtaar, Britishers represented in Ravana's form, Sita as (Bharatta/India), Moorthy/Vishnu (the main character as Gandhiji).
Keywords
Mythical characters, Mahatma Gandhi, Kanthapura (Raja Ram Mohan Roy), Quit India movement.

Introduction

Raja Ram Mohan Roy born in (1772-1833) has tried to frame Kanthapura in Indian context interwoven with mythological characters. Though prevented by his father not to mingle with Indians, he at last when returning from abroad in 1792, with the help of his mother, as she was greatly influenced by “vedantic literature” guided him properly and as a result he learnt Bengali, Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit languages.
Here primarily concerning Bengali language and myth of the India, he has tried to reflect myth in his novel called ‘Kanthapura’.

Kanthapura vs. Ramayana

As we have seen in Kanthapura how Achakka is represented as the narrator of the novel, while in Ramayana “valmiki” is presented as a relator.
In this novel Moorthy is represented in Vishnu’s figure from Ramayana. After sita’s abduction however he has struggled to rescue sita from Ravana, Moorthy is grappling to rescue his “Bharatta/Sita” from Britishers.
Moving further we have also seen that how moorthy has emotional attachment with all his religious festivals, for which he collects money from quarter to quarter from village to village. How all People whether they belong to weaver, potter, pariah or sudra and though being Brahmin he treats everyone equally and as Gandhiji has framed a new india where all should be equal, there shouldn’t any hierarchy and all people equally contribute in healing and curing India and the tools which he was using was non-violence and he was utilizing this specific skill in such a way that the oppressor was getting slain by his sole speech. He didn’t further need to say anything. Which not similarly, but with same trauma Rama might have passed through, throughout his journey to rescue Sita.
Furthermore the writer has also put forward the concept of spinning wheel, khaddar, cotton etc.

“Words were working as an action”.

In “Ramachar’s katha” a story has been prescribed. Where ‘Brahma is lying upon the serpent and Valmiki is coming to visit him and he is welcomed by Brahma.
Seems as imagination is given liveliness. Those who were static in ages, of whom we only know in the form of stories, have become reality.
Then the kathakaar compares “Bharatta” with Sita/India…

{Complaining along with plead}

He says…As o God/Brahma {by addressing him} at first you were very protective in such a way that…
From North side you have protected your “beloved daughter” with Himalaya; from South “she” is tutelaged with seven surging seas. Seas like Ganges for meditation, Godavari for living, pure Cauvery for drinking also you blessed your beloved with diamonds and gold and very civilized kings like “Asoka”(who loved his enemies and never tried to kill animals) and many like as Vikramaditya, Dharmaraya, Chandragupta and Akbar noblers!

You were working as a radiating light but now suddenly what has happened to you!

Do we have committed any mistake?
Aren’t we having that much worth that can earn your heart?
At times you were saying we are your like my children, then what happened?
Mother can’t see her children in worries and stress, then why you have muted yourself?
Don’t our emotions matter to you?
Neither saying anything nor reacting towards it.

He further says due to your ignorance it is happening with us that Britishers are coming across from the seas and oceans and they might trample our wisdom and spit on our virtue (related with spirituality). See how we are poor that women are dying without milk and men from ignorance and it is continued to happen, we perhaps wouldn’t have survival on the Earth and in coming time it might happen that we would be surrendering ourselves accordingly.

Here Sita’s purity/chastity is compared with Ravana’s cruelty/ugliness. While god is becoming medium of gaining help to rescue “Bharatta”.

Then God is replying that “I’m sending incarnation of my formed God who will help you to save India from Bruiser’s clutches. Gradually it happens and there we have Moorthy while in Ramayana we have Vishnu that resembles Gandhiji.

Hence we learnt how the writer has tried his best to lift human beings at God level and God to its contradictory. Where a pregnant meaning seems to reveal its own truth that by doing this Raja Rao Mohan Roy had merged public with God. Perhaps he wants to remove the difference and while in literal way he wants to bridge it.
